Shrewsbury MP Daniel Kawczynski has warned that Brexit faces a year or more of delays if the House of Commons refuses to back the Prime Minister in a further vote.

Staunch Brexiteer Mr Kawczynski said he had been trying to convince colleagues including fellow Shropshire MP Owen Paterson to back Theresa May's deal next week.

The Shrewsbury & Atcham MP and his colleagues have also been reaching out to other parties in the hopes of getting Mrs May the support she needs.

He said he would "fight, fight and fight again" to prevent a second referendum, but warned that the longer Brexit was dragged out, the more likely it was that the discussion would be had.

Mr Kawczynski was speaking to nearly 100 constituents at Oxon Church Hall during a surgery last night.

And although most of the evening was spent on Brexit, issues including climate change, the NHS, homelessness and the North West Relief Road were also discussed.

The MP made it clear that he would do whatever he could to stop a second referendum.

"I am worried about what will happen to the cohesion of our society if we have a referendum and that decision is overturned," he said.

"There will be huge amount of concern and a lack of confidence in the political decision making process."

Mr Kawczynski voted against Mrs May's Brexit deal during the previous two votes but last week announced he would back any further votes because he had seen the dangers of obstructing a deal.

"Those of us who now realise the ramifications of not voting for this deal are lobbying our colleagues in a very intensive way to back down and get behind the Prime Minister," he said.

"That's within the Conservative Party, and we're reaching out to the Labour Party and others to back the deal.

"If the deal is not ratified next week, we really are talking about an extension of a year or even more. Then we get to the scenario of a referendum."
