The contractor, who had not been named, was working at the site, in Holyhead Road, Chirk, when the incident happened at about 3pm.

In a statement Kronospan said: "Unfortunately a contractor working at the factory today had an accident while working at height. Welsh Air ambulance have taken him to hospital, and his company are making sure that he and his family are fully supported at this difficult time.

"We are obviously extremely concerned as to how this has happened and our health and safety manager is working closely with the relevant authorities to establish the facts."

Welsh Ambulance Service spokesman Liam Randall said: "We were called at shortly before 3pm this afternoon to reports that a man had fallen through roofing at Kronospan in Chirk.

"The Wales Air Ambulance and two crews in emergency ambulances are currently at the scene."

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) said it had not yet been informed of the incident, but that it was still early for reporting.

Last August a gas explosion rocked the site near Oswestry. There were no injuries in the explosion, but it is believed that some walls inside the factory were damaged.
