The busy trunk road has had to be closed between the Gledrid and Halton roundabouts for at least 24 hours for repairs to the safety barriers on the bridge across the River Ceiriog.

The accident happened at 18.43 on Monday on the busy road which carries both the A5 and the A483 and involved one vehicle.

A fire crew from Chirk was joined by a second from Oswestry, across the Shropshire border.

Firefighters used specialised cutting equipment to release the woman from the wreckage while also cooling down the vehicle with a hose reel for safety.

She was treated by paramedics from North Wales Ambulance.

Police, who closed the road for the emergency services to deal with the crash, at first said the carriageway would be closed for at least two hours. Officers later announced the road would remain closed all day Tuesday for barrier repairs.

North Wales Police tweeted: “Repairs needed on the barriers... Avoid area if possible. Highways are advising road will be closed Monday evening and all day Tuesday.”

Motorists reported lengthy queues on the busy stretch of road, while police urged motorists to avoid the area if possible.

The Gledrid roundabout is undergoing a major revamp, with work expected to finish at the end of this month.
