Linkin Park to make Download Festival history as first female-fronted headline act

Emily Armstrong joined Linkin Park as their lead singer in 2024.

Linkin Park will make Download Festival history when they take to the stage this weekend as the first female-fronted band to headline the event.

The UK’s biggest rock music festival, which is held annually at Donington Park, has traditionally been dominated by male-led groups such as Iron Maiden, Slipknot, and Metallica since it began in 2003.

However, this year’s event, dubbed ‘Download XXIII’, will see the first-female fronted headliner when Linkin Park are scheduled take to the Apex Stage on Sunday night (June 14) at 9.25pm.

Linkin Park reformed in 2024, seven years after the death of original frontman Chester Bennington, with American rock singer and songwriter Emily Armstrong joining the band as its new co-lead vocalist.

Armstrong, who was previously best known as the co-founder and lead singer of the rock band Dead Sara, was officially introduced alongside Mike Shinoda in September 2024.

The band's return was marked by the release of their new single, The Emptiness Machine, and the announcement of their album From Zero.

Her appointment generated a lot of discussion among fans. Many praised her vocal ability and her distinct style rather than trying to imitate Chester Bennington, while others debated the band's decision and raised questions about her past associations and upbringing in the Church of Scientology.

Armstrong later issued a public statement apologizing for past support of actor Danny Masterson and said she does not condone abuse or violence.

Chester Bennington's family also criticised the band with his son, Jaime, accusing remaining members of "quietly erasing" his father's "life and legacy".
