Inside the charming Shropshire village that became a TV star on Channel 5's Murder Before Evensong

Worfield is a quiet village with lots of character

With its historic church, picturesque streets and strong sense of community, it is easy to see why Worfield caught the attention of television producers.

The attractive village, situated just outside Bridgnorth and within easy reach of Wolverhampton, enjoyed a spell in the spotlight in February last year when it was transformed into the fictional village of Champton St Mary for Channel 5's adaptation of Murder Before Evensong.

Viewers across the country were treated to scenes featuring some of Worfield's best-known landmarks, with the village's timeless character providing the perfect backdrop for the popular drama.

For residents, it was a proud moment to see their community showcased on screen, while for visitors it offered a glimpse into one of Shropshire's most charming locations.

The production filmed at The Dog & Davenport Arms pub on Main Street, which appears as the village pub in the Channel 5 series alongside other notable village locations like St Peter’s Church and the local stores.

"It's a great community around here," Charlotte Byrne, landlady at The Dog & Davenport Arms, told us earlier this year. "We've got youngest of around five and the oldest at 98, and it's a lovely mixture where everyone knows everyone and everyone looks after everyone. There's a great sense of community in the village.

"On Sundays at the pub we have the 'God Squad' table because the vicar will come in and sit with all the regulars at lunchtime. We have the young farmers in most nights playing poker and all round there's just a nice mixture of people.

"We host meetings in here, the tennis club and the golfers will be in once a week, there's a book club. Loads of different people from the village come here."

The village boasts a rich history stretching back centuries, centred around the striking St Peter's Church, which dominates the skyline and remains a focal point for village life.

What makes Worfield particularly special is its community spirit. Residents continue to support local events, preserve traditional skills and celebrate customs that have been passed down through generations.

This close-knit atmosphere has helped the village retain its unique character while remaining a welcoming place for newcomers and visitors alike.

Surrounded by rolling countryside and offering a peaceful escape from the bustle of nearby towns and cities, Worfield combines rural beauty with a vibrant community life. Its blend of heritage, tradition and modern-day village pride makes it one of Shropshire's standout locations.

The arrival of television crews may have introduced Worfield to a wider audience, but those who know the village best would argue its greatest appeal has always been the same: a beautiful setting, a fascinating history and a community that continues to thrive.
