In pictures: Care homes celebrate VE Day in style with celebratory lunches and entertainment

Staff at a Bridgnorth nursing home donned 1940s-style clothing as residents and their families celebrated the 80th anniversary of VE Day.

Today (May 8) marked 80 years since the end of the Second World War and events have been held up and down the county to commemorate the occasion.

Both Oldbury Grange Nursing Home in Bridgnorth and Priorslee House in Telford have celebrated the day in style with a celebratory lunch.

Staff at Oldbury Grange Nursing Home also wore 1940s-style clothes to work as residents enjoyed a celebratory lunch, songs from the era and other entertainment including the reading of a war poem.

"It means a lot to the residents. We have one lady who has vivid memories of the war and all of the staff came dressed in clothes from the time, and she said it reminded her of when she was a little girl."

Meanwhile, at Priorslee House, children from Redhill Primary School visited to join the care home's garden party. Residents also enjoyed further entertainment in the afternoon including some wartime songs.

Joyce Hinton is one of several residents at Priorslee House who shared their experiences of the war and celebrating VE Day with the Shropshire Star.

The 93-year-old said she remembered sheltering while bombs dropped around her and caused the chimney of her house to fall through into her bedroom.

Resident liaison and admissions manager at Priorslee House, Jess Stokes added: "A lot of our residents were alive during the war times so it is important that we remember them and celebrate them.

"With Cosford, Shawbury, MOD Donnington in a closed proximity, a lot of our residents have connections to those places.

"Some of the stories they tell are quite funny and surprising, some of the things they got up to. But, generally they are really proud of the efforts of everyone in that time."
