'I'm not being a killjoy here' - MP backs crackdown on 'noisy fireworks'
An MP is backing a change in the law that would crack down on the sale of 'noisy' fireworks.
Shrewsbury's Labour MP, Julia Buckley said she plans to support proposed legislation, which would limit the sale of 'loud and noisy fireworks'
The proposed new law is about to be debated in Parliament.
Mrs Buckley said: “Don’t get me wrong. I’m not being a killjoy here. Of course, many of us enjoy fireworks as part of celebratory events and that’s fine.
“But these very loud fireworks being launched out of season – pretty much any night of the week - and with increasing noise volumes, can be heavily disruptive not only to our pets, which is why the RSPCA and the Dogs Trust are among those backing this new Bill, but also to people with autism, for example, or to war veterans or other people suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, PTSD.”
The new Fireworks Bill, introduced by Sarah Owen MP, will have its second reading in the House of Commons on January 17.
It calls for the restriction of a certain category of firework to the general public and for noise levels of all fireworks sold to the public to be decreased.
Mrs Buckley added her signature to a million others supporting the planned changed back in November.
