Historic Shropshire pub moves closer to reopening

The Bridge Inn has been recruiting for a manager, supervisors, bar staff, and cleaners

A Shropshire brewer is putting the final touches in place before reopening an historic Newport pub.

Rowton Brewery has announced that its real ale pumps are on the bar at The Bridge Inn, and the pub has been recruiting for a manager, supervisors, bar staff, and cleaners.

This week a planning application has been lodged to put new signs up at the Grade II-listed pub in Lower Bar in the Newport Conservation Area.

Officials at Telford & Wrekin Council will be called on to assess the new signs and their impact on the listed building and the conservation area.

The brewer has already granted permission for its refurbishment.

Planning agent AHA Associates, of Horsehay, Telford, has told the council that the plan is for a new hanging sign, a new fascia sign and some historic-style wording on one side of the building.

Planners have been told that the building is of "considerable local historic and communal significance and makes a positive contribution to the character and appearance of the historic town centre”.

A new hanging sign within the existing swing sign location depicts the adjacent historic canal bridge.

This, the agent said, reinforces the building’s connection to the local townscape and waterways.

"The sign incorporates simple traditional typography reading ‘The Bridge Free House’ together with Rowton Brewery branding," they add.

A new sign on the front of the building will read “The Bridge Free House – Est. 1747”.

The agent added that the signs have been designed as a "modest and sympathetic intervention which preserves the character and appearance of the Bridge Inn and the Newport Conservation Area”.

They concluded that the proposals will "improve the visual appearance and legibility of the public house while preserving the significance of the heritage asset and supporting its continued viable use as an important community facility”.

Planners are set to make a decision on the application by August 8.

Details of the plans can be seen on the Telford & Wrekin Council planning portal (reference TWC/2026/0422).
