Historic former Telford slaughterhouse set to be brought back to life

A public consultation period has opened on the plan in Wellington town centre

An historic slaughterhouse in Wellington could be converted into a house if council planners approve.

Previous proposals to use the site of 20 Market Street for two houses and the sale of motor vehicles were withdrawn after Telford & Wrekin planners said it would not be supported.

Now Telford resident Sagheer Khan has applied to convert the two storey former slaughterhouse into a two-bed dwelling. The site is sandwiched between the Market Street car park and the railway line.

Planning agent Robert Metcalfe, of EMS Design, in Market Drayton, has told officials that the buildings have been underused or vacant for a significant period, with potential risk of further decline if not brought back into beneficial use.

"There is an identified housing need within Telford & Wrekin, particularly for smaller dwellings in sustainable locations," wrote Mr Metcalf.

"The scheme directly contributes towards meeting this requirement."

The agent adds that the approach "reflects the established character of Wellington and supports housing supply and economic activity."

The planning application also mentions that a one bed apartment will also be designed with step free access.

Planners have been told that the buildings will be upgraded to modern energy efficiency standards, including improved insulation, glazing, heating and lighting.

"The development represents a sustainable and positive reuse of this town centre site.

"Planning permission is therefore respectfully sought," the agent writes.

Officials will consider the application following a period of public consultation which has now opened on the council's planning portal with the reference TWC/2026/0209.
