Measles vaccine is needed by one in 10 across Telford & Wrekin

More than one in 10 children in Telford & Wrekin are still not fully vaccinated against measles, new figures revealed today.
Almost 1,000 children in the borough have no record of having a vaccination, while more than 500 have only had one dose.
That means 11 per cent of the 10 to 16-year-olds are still not fully vaccinated from MMR.
Helen Onions, Interim Assistant Director for Public Health and Wellbeing, said: "Overall there is a goal to make sure 95 per cent of all age groups are immunised against Measles, Mumps and Rubella. At the beginning of May this year 89 per cent of children aged 10 to 16 years had been fully immunised.
"Four per cent in this same age group have been identified as needing another dose of the MMR vaccine, while a further seven per cent have no record of receiving any immunisation.
"These 10 to 16-year-olds are in the 'catch-up' cohort and the 11 per cent who are not fully protected need to have their immunisations as soon as possible."
In May this year, at the start of the catch- up campaign, 89 per cent of children in the borough aged between 10 and 16 were recorded as fully vaccinated, which means they have received two doses.
Four per cent were recorded as having one dose, which is 520 children, while seven per cent had no record of MMR vaccine, which equates to 930 children.
This means the council are targeting the 1,450 10 to 16-year-old children who aren't fully up-to-date through the campaign.
The figures were released today by Telford & Wrekin Council after Public Health England said last week 56,000 children across the country were not vaccinated when they were younger.
It comes after an outbreak in Wales that has spread across the border into Shropshire and Telford.
The vast majority of young children in the borough are vaccinated.
It was revealed last week that 96 per cent of two-year-olds had received one dose of MMR vaccine at the end of March 2013 and, among five-year-olds there has been an increase in immunisation in the past year.
