The 'Warm Welcome on a Wednesday' group was launched in January 2019 by the churches of Newport as a support group for people living with dementia in the town and nearby.

The group normally meets monthly at the Parish Rooms in Newport where singing, musical movement, games and afternoon tea are often on the agenda.

Throughout the coronavirus lockdowns, the group has been supported by a band of volunteer helpers by telephone, socially distanced doorstep visits and the provision of gift bags including teabags and biscuits, puzzles, colouring, recipes and challenges and with extras such as plants, flowers and cake. A weekly zoom 'Coffee and Chat' was also started this year.

The group's award

The group was nominated for an award from the county's High Sheriff by Neil Brookes, and in February the group was informed of success in gaining an award, reflecting service to the community.

Mrs Dean Harris, Shropshire's outgoing High Sheriff, presented the award at St Andrews Church in Church Aston as one of her last acts in the role.

Hilary Griffin, coordinator for the group, said that throughout lockdowns the volunteers have been struck by the strength and resilience of their members, who "have perhaps faced the greatest loss of support services during the pandemic. There is a great sense of community and the group look forward to being able to get together in person very soon".
