Mr Kawczynski said the future of hospital services in the region were at stake – and now was the time to work to protect them.

His comments come after it was revealed that 1,515 people had responded to the consultation by its mid point.

About 653 people responding came from the Shropshire area, with a further 611 having their say from Telford. Another 251 respondents were from Mid Wales.

Mr Kawczynski said: "I am encouraged by the number of people whom I have seen at the Furture Fit public meetings. The vast majority have gone away very impressed by the presentations of the surgeons and doctors once people have the information about any changes that are necessary to be made and where safety will be augmented.

"I would urge the people of Shrewsbury, north Shropshire and Mid-Wales in these final weeks to get involved in the process as we do not want the medical expertise to be overturned by the political scaremongering such as what is being put forward by the likes of Shaun Davies."
