Grade II-listed Shifnal hotel reveals expansion plans

The business said the expansion will help meet a growing demand

A hotel in Shifnal has revealed plans to add almost a dozen new guest bedrooms to the venue.

Haughton Hall Hotel has unveiled plans to convert part of its west wing from offices into 11 additional guest bedrooms, as the Grade II‑listed venue looks to expand its accommodation and meet growing demand.

A planning statement submitted to Shropshire Council said the offices, located in a mid-century extension of the building, are no longer viable to let once the current tenants’ lease ends.

The hotel has argued that only a “limited number of businesses” would be suitable replacements, making continued office use difficult to sustain.

“The applicant's intention is to convert the office space into additional bedrooms for the hotel,” documents stated.

“The proposed design is in keeping with the rest of the hotel, with sympathetic alterations.”

A separate application submitted by the hotel reveals additional plans to refurbish disused former bedrooms in the main hall’s loft space, which are currently used for storage and staff accommodation.

The hotel, which dates back to 1718, has grown significantly in recent years, establishing itself as a regional wedding venue with spa facilities, a gym, swimming pool and 37 existing bedrooms.

A supporting statement argued that the expansion would boost the local visitor economy, citing Shropshire’s strong tourism sector and the hotel’s proximity to attractions such as the Ironbridge Gorge.

“There is a need for additional bedrooms at Haughton Hall to accommodate for the recent growth in the business,” it said.

The full application is available to view online on Shropshire Council’s planning portal using reference number 26/01482/FUL.
