Four-year road ban for 'selfish' Shropshire woman after drink-drive crash
It’s not the first time she’s been caught drink-driving
A 66-year-old woman has been fined and ordered to pay compensation after admitting drink driving following a collision in a village near Shrewsbury.
Gillian Peart, 66 and of West View in Ford, pleaded guilty to driving under the influence of alcohol when she appeared at Telford Magistrates Court on Tuesday (October 20).
The court heard that on September 18 Peart was involved in a crash with another vehicle in West View.
A breath test later showed Peart had 95 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath in her system, almost three times the legal limit (35mcg per 100ml).
In mitigation Stephen Scully told the court Peart accepted she was over the legal limit at the time of the crash, but claimed she had consumed an alcoholic drink between the incident and her arrest.
Mr Scully said Peart - who had been banned for drink driving previously - had been struggling with her mental health and had been drinking “more than usual”.
District Judge Graham Wilkinson said: “I'm sympathetic about your circumstances, but my sympathy ends when you are willing to put other people’s lives at risk.
“Each year over 200 families stand at gravesides because of selfish people like you, people who feel their need to drive outweighs others people’s right to life.”
Peart was disqualified from driving for four years. She was also ordered to pay £500 in compensation to the owner of the other vehicle, a £100 fine, £85 in prosecution costs and a £114 victim surcharge.
