Trading Standards have issued recalls for four items that pose a risk to children - including listings from Amazon and TikTok shop.

The items, which range from toys to dummy clips, pose some serious risks in the notices published on the regulator’s website today (May 20).

Some pose risks of fire or burns, while others have been recalled due to choking or strangulation risk.

A centipede toy sold by Amazon has been recalled as it poses ‘serious risk of burns’.

The orange and black plastic toy, which comes with a with red remote control and yellow charging lead, is said to have easily accessible batteries. Customers are urged to return the product to Amazon for a refund and that the listing has since been removed from the online retailer.

A spokesperson for Trading Standards said: “The product presents a serious risk of burns and injuries as the button batteries are easily accessible. These batteries may be placed in the mouth and swallowed, causing damage to the gastrointestinal tract. The product does not meet the requirements of the Toys (Safety) Regulations 2011.

“We recommend owners stop using this product immediately. Contact the distributor you purchased from to request redress. The listing has been removed by the online marketplace (Amazon).”

A children’s playmat, which was for sale on TikTok shop, has been recalled due to choking risk.

The product, which is aimed for use by babies, was listed on TikTok as ‘Extra Large Foldable Baby Play Mat (150x180cm) - Waterproof XPE Foam Crawling Mat for Infants & Toddlers - Non-Toxic, Portable Floor Activity Mat with Non-Slip Surface’ and made in China.

However, it is found to pose a chocking risk as it may fall apart over time.

A spokesperson for Trading Standards: “The product presents a serious risk of choking as the printed laminate may detach over time, creating small parts. These small parts pose a choking hazard to young children, particularly those under 36 months of age who have a natural tendency to explore objects by placing them in their mouths.

“The product does not meet the requirements of the Toys (Safety) Regulations 2011. The import has been rejected at the border and destroyed.”

Satin dummy clips sold by Elizabeth Anne Children’s Wear Limited have been recalled due to ‘strangulation risk’.

The ‘My Little Chick Dummy Clips’ is said to have a strap that is longer than the permitted length which could cause the strap to get caught around a child’s neck. The detachable fasteners are also small enough to be swallowed and broke during testing which could block an infants airway.

Customers have been advised to return the items to the retailer for a full refund.

A spokesperson for Trading Standards said: “The product presents a risk of choking as the detachable garment fasteners are small enough to be swallowed and also broke during impact testing. This means they may become lodged in a child's airway.

“The product strap is also 322mm, which is longer than the maximum permitted length. This poses a strangulation risk to infants.

“The product does not meet the requirements of the General Product Safety Regulations 2005. The product has been recalled from end users by Sheldon International LTD (importer) and withdrawn from the market by the distributor Elizabeth-Anne Children's Wear Limited.

“We recommend that you stop using this product immediately and keep it out of reach of small children. Contact the distributor you purchased from for redress. Electric Baby Rocking Chair

An electric baby rocking chair bouncer with a remote and a black 3-pin AC adapter has been recalled due to it being a fire hazard.

Trading Standards said imports of the chair were stopped at the border due to the adapter not meeting the dimensional requirements to form a secure connection to the socket.

A spokesperson said: “The product presents a high risk of fire as the supplied adapter does not meet the dimensional requirements of BS 1363. This means it cannot make a secure connection to the socket, which may lead to the adapter overheating and catching fire.

“There is also no safety fusible resistor protection, and the internal mains wiring is not adequately secured. The breakdown isolation between the input and output circuits does not meet insulation requirements. In the event of a fault or flashover, these issues mean the product is likely to overheat, leading to a fire.

“Improvements are also required to product documentation and marking. The product does not meet the requirements of the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016 or the Plugs & Sockets (Safety) Regulations 1994.”
