Brothers celebrate top prizes

Brothers Mike and Phil Wood collected the top prizes at Bishop's Castle Auction's highly successful Christmas fatstock show and sale on December 6.
The successful J. A. Wood and Sons farming partnership from Kinnerton took the silverware for the champion pen of lambs and was also judged the reserve champion after winning two classes.
They are pictured receiving the cup from Judge Rob Pritchard.
An entry of 1,500 prime lambs received a very respectable trade to average an overall 105 per kg. Heavier weights were more difficult to place, with lights at 101p/kg, standard weights averaging 111.5p/kg and mediums 105p/kg.
Christmas prize classes were judged by Rob Pritchard of Newport, with J. A. Wood and Sons winning the 37.5-43.5kg class, and the overall award for a pen of lambs weighing in at 39kg and selling at an excellent £78 per head or 200p/kg going to local butcher Andrew Pugh. Second prize went to Mike Adams, Foxholes, with lambs of 40.5kg, selling at £45.50 to Euro Quality Meats.
J. A. Wood and Sons also won the over-44kg class with lambs weighing 44.5kg, selling at £58 or 130.3p/kg to Andrew Pugh. Second was John Croxton, of Purslow, with lambs of 44kg purchased by Bishop's Castle Meat at £47.
The up-to-37kg class was won by Brian Williams, Hill End, with 35kg lambs, which sold at £40 for 35kg.
