Drone captures new aerial view of vast Shropshire solar farm under construction

A new aerial view has revealed the latest progress on a huge solar farm near Telford’s most famous hill.

Three years after a bitter planning dispute came to an end, hundreds of steel frames now stretch across several fields at the foot of the Wrekin as work to build a giant solar farm continues.

The 135‑acre scheme, between the landmark hill and the M54 at Wellington, was first submitted to Telford & Wrekin Council in 2021 and went on to attract hundreds of objections.

The authority rejected the plans, but developers RE Projects Development Ltd and Steeraway Solar successfully appealed to the Government’s planning inspectorate, which overturned the decision.

Telford & Wrekin Council made a further attempt to block the project, arguing it would be a “blight” on the landscape, but the High Court denied its right to appeal.

The site was later acquired by UK power producer Enviromena. Construction began on the site in March, and thousands of frames have now been installed.

Enviromena says the completed solar farm will generate enough clean electricity to power more than 15,000 homes a year and prevent over 8,000 tonnes of carbon emissions.

The site is expected to be connected to the grid by late 2026.
