Diamond couple celebrate wedding anniversary

Ever since their eyes met across a crowded room at a drama club David and Phyllis Watts have known they belonged together.

That first meeting was more than six decades ago, and now the couple have celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary.

They believe loyalty and friendship is the answer to a good marriage, having supported each other through thick and thin.

Mr Watts, now 85, can still remember when his wife walked down the aisle in June 19 1954, on what he described as a beautiful sunny day in Devon.

He said: "It was at an amateur dramatic club that we met. Phyllis was making lace and she's always been very talented like that.

"I looked up and there she was, but you didn't go fast back then.

"Ours was a slow courtship, it was like that back in those days and we just got to gradually know each other.

"When we got married it was such a lovely sunny day, and you could hear the train chugging past the church taking tourists to Torquay which was where we had our wedding reception."

The couple have one son together and have supported each other through ill health in recent years.

Mr Watts said: "I think loyalty, humour, and having shared interests has certainly contributed to us staying together.

"We both have type two diabetes and we've been involved in a support group.

"We have shared interests to a certain extent and we had such a brilliant day celebrating with family and friends."
