Delivering Christmas presents in his work van led to a man losing everything and living in his car

A man who delivered Christmas presents on his way home from work in his works van did not have valid insurance because it did not cover personal use.

Wesley Rigby who was stopped for having a tyre with insufficient tread in Newbridge on Wye, was also found to have no insurance during police checks.

The 38 year-old of Walter Street, Oswaldtwistle told Llandrindod Wells Magistrates Court on Tuesday that he is living in his car after losing his job and house after being sacked because of the matter.

Rigby admitted having a tyre with less than 1.6mm tread on the front nearside wheel of a Volkswagen Crafter on the A470 at Newbridge on Wye on November 29 2025.

He initially denied having no insurance on the same occasion, after his boss sent a screen shot of the policy for the van to the police.

But because Rigby was delivering Christmas presents on his way home from work, the policy was invalid as it did not cover personal use. Rigby changed his plea to guilty at the court.

Rigby said he had been sacked because of the matter and is now living in his car.

Magistrates were told he had three points on his licence and they accepted both of his guilty pleas.

They fined him £120 and placed six points on his licence for having no insurance, there was no separate penalty for the defective tyre. So he now has nine points on his licence.

He will also have to pay £85 costs and a £48 victim surcharge.
