A cashpoint was ripped from a supermarket wall in Telford in an attack that was today linked to two other attempts to steal cash in the Midlands.

Three thieves managed to lever the cashpoint from the wall at the Tesco store on Wrekin Retail Park in the early hours of yesterday using heavy industrial tools.

They then fled on foot to an isolated spot close to junction six of the M54 at Ketley.

Police were today investigating if they managed to break open the armoured case and how much they escaped with.

Officers today said they are looking into the possibility that the gang could have come across the border from the Midlands, after two similar attacks happened on the same night.

Chris Ammonds, of West Mercia Police, said: "We are looking into the CCTV footage, which shows three individuals using various implements to break into the cash machine."

Mr Ammonds said that they fled to towards the M54 junction after the attack in the early hours of Boxing Day.

"It is not clear if they used a getaway vehicle to make their escape.

He added: "We are looking into the possibility that this may be connected to two other attacks on cash machines in the Midlands on the same night.

"We are currently reviewing the CCTV and will be looking into it alongside West Midlands Police.

"We would urge anyone who saw anything suspicious to get in touch with us."

Witnesses, or anyone with information, should call 101, quoting 55S 261213, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
