Man arrested after stabbing in Shrewsbury town centre

A man has been arrested after a stabbing in a Shrewsbury town centre street today.

Commuters on their way to work saw the air ambulance circling the town looking for somewhere to land.

Paramedics were called to treat the victim after the assault at about 8.30am near to Raven Meadows and Castle Street.

Police initially said they were trying to trace two men who were believed to have been involved and extra officers were deployed to the area.

They later said one man had been arrested.

The Midlands Air Ambulance from Cosford landed in the nearby Frankwell car park and a land ambulance and paramedic officer also attended.

A spokeswoman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said that one man, who had sustained serious injuries, had been airlifted to hospital for further treatment.

Superintendent Mo Lansdale said: "Thankfully incidents of this nature do not happen often in Shrewsbury however when they do we recognise the concern it can cause to our local community.

"Our enquiries are in their initial stages however we do believe those involved in this incident are known to each other.

"If anyone does have any information that can help with our enquiries we would urge them to get in contact.

"We will be in Shrewsbury town centre throughout the day to offer reassurance and I would urge anyone who is concerned to stop and speak to us."
