Five men and a woman, aged between 18 and 22, were all convicted of affray after they set upon Alex Owen at Round Hill Close, in the Coton Hill area of Shrewsbury.

Shrewsbury Crown Court heard more than a dozen young men and women gathered near where Mr Owen was helping a friend with his classic car on June 9 2016.

The gang, calling themselves the Sundorne Bad Boys, had heard rumours that Mr Owen had made disparaging remarks about some of their members.

Demi Jennings, the oldest of the sentenced group at 22, scouted out the driveway and reported back to the men.

Joshua Roberts, 20, then confronted Mr Owen, who denied making the remarks, and Roberts sparked a brawl by headbutting him.

Jordan Warren, 20, Thomas Barnes, 20, Shay Lindo, 18, and Thomas Milner, 18, were then involved in punching him and hitting him with metal breaker bars.

Mr Owen was trapped in the cul-de-sac until a neighbour opened a gate for him to escape.

He suffered bruises and cuts and said he was anxious and nervous in the days following the attack.

Prosecuting, Laura Nash said that one of the men shouted "Who are we?" and others answered "SBB".

Judge Peter Barrie said: "It was only by good fortune that Mr Owen's injuries were superficial and they might have been much more serious."

He sentenced Roberts, of Roselyn, Shrewsbury, to eight months in a Young Offenders' Institute for his part in the affray, as well as two months for an unrelated matter of failing to attend a drugs appointment.

Barnes, of White House Gardens, was given a nine-month sentence suspended for a year.

He was also ordered to pay compensation to Mr Owen and the man whose car window was smashed in the melee.

Jennings, of New Park Road, Ditherington, was given an 18-month order, with 25 days of rehabilitation activity, a Thinking Skills course and 120 unpaid work hours.

Warren was given a community order for 18 months, Lindo an 18-month order with a supervision element and Milner a 12-month Youth Rehabilitation Order.

All three are from the Shrewsbury area.
