Newport murder probe: Shooting victim named as Cheryl Hooper, 51

The woman shot and killed in Newport was today named as 51-year-old Cheryl Hooper.

West Mercia Police said that murder investigation inquiries are ongoing after the shocking incident, which took place last Friday night.

Ms Hooper died from a gunshot wound to the neck according to police.

A 45-year-old man arrested on suspicion of murder is still in hospital, where he is being guarded by armed police.

A spokesman for the force said: "The woman has been formally identified as 51-year-old Cheryl Hooper. A post mortem conducted on Sunday, January 28, confirmed that the cause of her death was a gunshot wound to the neck.

"A 45-year-old man who was arrested on suspicion of murder remains in hospital under police guard. He is currently receiving medical treatment for gunshot wounds. The cause of his injuries is not being treated as suspicious."

Superintendent Tom Harding from West Mercia Police has moved to reassure Newport residents in the wake of the incident, and said people should expect to see more officers while they are continuing their investigations.

He said: "Investigations are continuing into this incident and officers remain in the area while enquiries are carried out.

"We know that members of the local community are shocked and upset by these events, and our officers are on hand to provide reassurance.

"Our thoughts remain with Cheryl's family, who are being supported by specially trained officers at this extremely distressing time. I'd like to ask that their privacy is respected."
