Construction partner named for operating theatre at Royal Shrewsbury Hospital

ModuleCo has won the brief to build a new ophthalmic theatre and recovery room

A contractor has been appointed to deliver a new eye operating theatre in the county.

Cheltenham-based ModuleCo has won the brief from Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin Community and Hospitals NHS Group to build the new facility at Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.

The 2,583 sq ft complex will include a new ophthalmic operating theatre, featuring an ultra clean ventilation canopy, alongside a dedicated two-bed recovery area for patients following their procedures.

Construction is being undertaken in a modular approach which will mean that 90 per cent of the work is completed off-site in order to reduce disruption to patients and staff.

The new theatre is expected to be completed early next year.

Jonathan Brindley, sales director for ModuleCo, said: "We are delighted to be working with the trust again to deliver this much-needed additional theatre capacity.

"We look forward to creating a facility that will support excellent patient care for many years to come."

Groundworks are under way on the construction site adjacent to wards 38 and 39 which were also constructed by ModuleCo and which opened in December last year.

Once completed, the theatre will connect to the two wards, strengthening access between surgical and rehabilitation teams.

Ned Hobbs, group chief operating officer and deputy chief executive of Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust, said: "We’re pleased to be working with ModuleCo on this exciting development following the successful delivery of our two new wards last year.

"The new theatre and recovery bays will allow us to continue building on the fantastic progress we are making in planned care, allowing more patients to receive much-needed surgery quicker, in a modern, purpose-built environment.

"I look forward to seeing the project take shape over the coming months."
