Confusion as council announces start of repairs on historic Shropshire bridge a month late

The works were due to start July 31.

A council have announced works starting on a historic bridge a month after they were due to start.

It was announced earlier this year that Longdon upon Tern Bridge - which carries the B5063 over the River Tern - will be closed to traffic for more than two months of works from July 31.

Temporary traffic lights have been in place at the Grade II-listed bridge since October last year after a vehicle crashed and caused damage to the south parapet. Subsequent investigations later identified additional structural defects requiring repair.

However, a post made this morning (August 31) states that “work starts today at Longdon Bridge” - a month later than the original date.

A spokesperson for Telford & Wrekin Council said: “Essential repairs and safety improvements are now underway at Longdon upon Tern Bridge.

“The project will not only repair damage to the historic structure but also deliver lasting safety benefits, including permanent traffic signals, a pedestrian crossing and improved footpaths.

“Diversion routes are clearly signed to help keep journeys moving as smoothly as possible. We thank residents and road users for their patience while these important improvements are carried out.”

Residents in the comments suggested that the post was scheduled for the wrong time, claiming the works were started when scheduled.

A resident asked: “I thought this started a month ago?” Another added: “I suspect this is a timed post that was supposed to go on the 31st July and not 31st August! I know they have been busy for the last 4 weeks, but other people may not know and be cross the road has been closed for a month if you announce its starting today!!”

However, a third said it was “about time.”

A spokesperson for Telford & Wrekin Council confirmed an image which featured in the post stating July 31 was posted in error. However, official road closures began on August 31.

The Facebook post has since been updated.
