Nina & Co is hosting performances of six vintage films for 2026, which will be included the rarely screened Powell and Pressburger film ‘Gone to Earth’ based on Mary Webb’s novel. The film will be shown in the cinema at Ludlow Assembly Rooms with an introduction starting at 7.15pm.
It was filmed in and around Much Wenlock with many locals appearing as extras.
“Gone to Earth was filmed in 1949/50, based on a 1917 novel by Mary Webb who became very popular in the 1920s and lived all her life in Shropshire. The novel was largely ignored when it first appeared, but it became better known in the 1930s during the neo-romantic revival.”
The story is of Hazel Woodus, a wild and independent young woman (Jennifer Jones) whose passion for the natural world sets her apart from the local community. Loved by a gentle minister (Cyril Cusack) while pursued by a passionate squire (David Farrar), Hazel is torn, and her struggle ends tragically as she desperately seeks sanctuary from the forces she feels closing around her.
Those interested in vintage films can pick up a leaflet with details of the remaining films in the series from Nina & Co, 10, Church Street, Ludlow.
