Antiques lovers are expected to sail through the doors when a Victorian ship's wheel goes under the hammer.

The wheel, incorporated into a wrought iron, glass and oak table, will be up for auction at the Perry & Phillips sale of antiques and collectables tomorrow.

Auctioneer John Ridgway said: "We've had some ships' wheels in the auction before now but this is a really nice one.

"It's a good size, measuring 54 inches in diameter, and it's in excellent condition.

"It could, of course, be taken out of the table and displayed on a wall."

The estimated price on the table is between £500 and £800.

Two vintage vases designed by the famous William Moorcroft will also go under the hammer.

The vases, made in the 1930s, feature a design of lilies and anemones and still bear the original 'Queen Mary' labels.

Mr Ridgway said: "Moorcroft founded his pottery in 1897 and quickly established an excellent reputation.

"He especially-liked featuring flowers such as magnolia, columbine, clematis, lilies and anemones in his designs.

"These vases, one measuring nine inches tall, the other six inches, are in excellent condition and are bound to attract collectors of fine pottery.

"It is unusual to find pieces such as this with the original paper labels still intact."

The estimate price on the vases is between £200 and £300 each.

A number of Cornishware storage jars, featuring the popular blue and white stripe design, will also be up for auction. The series of eight jars, manufactured by T G Green, date from the 1950s and all bear an individual contents label.

The estimate price on the jars is between £100 and £200. The auction, at the Mill Street saleroom, runs from 10.30am.
