Earlier this week, some residents in Bridgnorth took to Facebook to lament the state of some parts of the town centre.

A number of residents posted pictures of areas of concern, including the rusty railing by the bridge and weeds on the pavements on Severn Street near to the Jobcentre.

Chris Bryan wrote: “Lived in Low Town for over 30 years. The community seating area next to the toilets by the boarded-up Parish Rooms is a disgrace.”

James Crowther added: “Down by the Jobcentre... surely there was £30 left over from the Cliff Railway budget for some weedkiller. Not nit-picking, always been thankful for living in Bridgnorth as it is a lovely town, but if it's not kept on top of it will end up a ship [sic] hole... let's hope someone sees these posts and can do something about it.”

Taking up the call was a group of the town's Scouts.

On Thursday, during torrential rain, a group of the Panthers Explorers Scout Unit from Bridgnorth got down and dirty and cleared up the weeds around Severn Street, and grateful residents immediately took to social media to thank the group.

Wayne Whitehouse, who posted a picture of the Scouts working, said: “Respect to these guys, weeding in the rain.”

Mel Barraclough said: “Well done all of you and thank you... hats off and well done to those giving their time and effort to this.”

Chris Byrne, who had made the original call to clean up the town, said: “Great stuff. You guys are really inspiring weeding in the rain. Hopefully others will rise up and take back control of our lovely town. Let's send a powerful example message to the council. I'm all in.”

Even Bridgnorth Town Council thanked the group of Scouts. A spokesperson said: “On behalf of the town council we would like to thank all those involved in helping improve our community. This is the responsibility of Shropshire Council and we will make them aware of this lovely gesture and all of your hard work.”

Philip Veal from Panthers Explorers Scout Unit said: “With the help of some tools from TG Builders, we did our best with the hour we had.”
