Rains puts bike event on hold

An event which was expected to attract hundreds of people to Shropshire this weekend has been cancelled because of the rain.

An event which was expected to attract hundreds of people to Shropshire this weekend has been cancelled because of the rain.

Mountain biking event the British 4X championship was due to take place on Saturday and Sunday at The Edge, Much Wenlock.

A host of top riders were expected to compete, including some from America.

But the event has been postponed until June to allow the ground to recover from the recent heavy rainfall.

Organiser Chris Roberts said: "The track is very wet and muddy and rather than risk running the event on what would be a very wet weekend, we have taken the decision to postpone until June 2 and 3.

"We want everyone to enjoy themselves at our events and feel that spending the weekend in a very wet muddy field is not going to be fun for anyone, least of all the all spectators and riders.

"We are sorry for any inconvenience caused and will transfer or refund any entries already received," he added.

The event follows a downhill race in Bridgnorth last October which saw the town's steep steps linking High Town with Low Town used as a course.

The event attracted hundreds of spectators.

Mr Roberts decided to bring the British 4X national tour to Shropshire because of the Bridgnorth event's success.
