The owner of Shropshire's historic cliff railway has spoken of his pride after the attraction featured on television.

Dr Malvern Tipping, who owns Bridgnorth Cliff Railway, said he was delighted to welcome presenter and former MP Michael Portillo for filming for the BBC series Great British Railway Journeys.

The railway featured in an episode which also covered the Black Country and the Severn Valley Railway.

Dr Tipping said: "From our perspective, Michael Portillo's visit to the cliff railway could not have been screened on a more appropriate day.

"It was screened on January 10, which was the 150th anniversary of the inauguration of the public passenger service on London's Metropolitan Railway, which was the world's first underground railway."

The episode saw Mr Portillo travel on the Severn Valley Railway from Kidderminster to Bridgnorth by steam, before opening shots of the cliff railway were filmed from the air to show how each carriage counter-balanced the other.

Dr Tipping said: "Mr Portillo was welcomed to the bottom station of the cliff railway by company secretary, Jason.

"The two were then shown talking about the history of the railway whilst their carriage travelled to the Top Station before the interview was concluded on Castle Walk."
