Amber heat warning brings rail disruption across the West Midlands and Shropshire
Reduced and cancelled services confirmed for the region due to heat
An Amber Heat Health Alert has been issued for the West Midlands as soaring temperatures begin to affect transport across the region, with rail passengers facing cancellations, reduced services and speed restrictions.
The UK Health Security Agency has upgraded its Heat Health Alert to amber for the West Midlands, with the warning remaining in place until 9pm on Sunday.
Forecasters expect temperatures to climb into the low to mid-30s later this week, with some areas approaching 35°C.
Transport for West Midlands has warned passengers to expect delays and disruption as the extreme heat affects rail infrastructure.
West Midlands Railway has confirmed a reduced service on the Chase Line. From 12pm, trains will not operate between Rugeley Trent Valley and Hednesford because of the high temperatures. Rail replacement buses are running between the two stations.
The disruption comes as rail operators across England introduce temporary measures to protect the network.
High temperatures can cause steel rails to expand and buckle, overhead power lines to sag, and increase the risk of lineside fires. Rail temperatures can exceed 50°C even when air temperatures are around 30°C.
Passengers travelling across the West Midlands and into Shropshire are being urged to check before they travel, allow extra time for their journey and carry drinking water. Services may be cancelled at short notice or operate at reduced speeds to maintain safety.
The Amber Heat Health Alert also highlights wider risks beyond transport. Health officials warn the prolonged hot weather could place extra pressure on health and care services, particularly affecting older people, young children and those with existing medical conditions.
The Met Office expects the hottest weather to arrive later this week, with warm nights offering little relief as overnight temperatures may remain above 20°C in some places.
Transport operators are advising customers to monitor the latest travel information before setting out as conditions continue to develop across the West Midlands and Shropshire.
