Showdown over Albrighton green belt begins as inquiry over 800-home plan due to open today

Developers are appealing the council’s rejection of their plan

A public inquiry into one of Shropshire’s largest and most hotly debated planning proposals is set to open today.

Boningale Developments Ltd is challenging Shropshire Council’s decision to to reject its bid for 800 homes, a local centre, a care home, and a secondary school on green belt land off Patshull Road in Albrighton.

The scheme, first lodged in 2024, has provoked intense public engagement, drawing more than 1,100 objections and firm resistance from residents, parish councils and community groups.

Despite the council’s refusal, the battle is raging on - with a planning inspector now tasked with weighing evidence from Boningale, Shropshire Council and the Albrighton Development Action Group.

The inquiry is set to open today (Tuesday, September 15) and is scheduled to take place over 12 days in the council chamber at Guildhall in Shrewsbury.
