Road ban and unpaid work for van driver who was nearly three times the alcohol limit on A5 near Oswestry

A lengthy disqualification was imposed by magistrates after the motoring offence

A van driver who was almost three times the drink drive limit on the busy A5 has been banned from the road.

William Evans, aged 58, drove a Ford Transit Connect on the carriageway between the Oswestry district boundary and the Wolfshead, near Ruyton-XI-Towns, on May 10 this year.

A breath test found that Evans had 105 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath in his system. The legal limit in England and Wales is 35mcg per 100ml.

Evans, of Church Road, Dorrington, near Shrewsbury, pleaded guilty at Telford Magistrates Court to driving with alcohol above the legally specified limit.

Magistrates banned Evans from driving for 27 months and handed a 12-month community order which includes 120 hours of unpaid work.

Evans was also ordered to pay £85 in prosecution costs.
