The museums had been run by the Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust (IGMT) for more than 60 years.

The sites closed on Sunday, February 22, ahead of the formal takeover by the National Trust, in what is one of the largest acquisitions in its history, and are due reopen in the spring in “phased” plans starting at the end of the month.

The takeover was partly funded by a £9m grant from the government, and was agreed over concerns about the long-term financial future of IGMT, and the impact on its crucial role in protecting some of the world's most important heritage sites.

On Saturday, which was World Heritage Day, the Trust said a lot was happening “behind the scenes”.

In a statement, the National Trust said: “Today, on World Heritage Day, we’re celebrating something very special. We’re proud to be the new custodians of the Ironbridge Gorge museums – a collection of places recognised around the world for their outstanding importance.

“Ironbridge Gorge is where the Industrial Revolution took shape, and looking after these sites and collections is both an honour and a responsibility. Everyone at the National Trust is excited to care for them, uncover their stories and, before long, welcome visitors back to experience their creativity, innovation and impact first‑hand.

“A lot is happening behind the scenes as we prepare for reopening, including essential IT systems and infrastructure work to make sure things are ready to open under our care. Progress is being made, and every step brings us closer to our goal.

“Thank you for the encouragement and enthusiasm shown – it truly means a great deal. We’ll be sharing more about what we’re up to and more details of our reopening plans here over the coming weeks.”
