Volkswagen teases new Polo ahead of full reveal

Popular premium supermini is being updated – and here’s our first look
Volkswagen has teased the highly anticipated Polo model refresh, which will get its full reveal later this week.
An image released today shows a rear taillight that looks very similar to the one on the outgoing model, but with a new LED ‘light signature’.
The teaser hints that the sixth-generation Polo won’t undergo a major overhaul design-wise, with earlier spy shots revealing that new, narrower headlights are likely to be the most prominent change.
Where the game has moved on is under the skin – the Polo is expected to sit on an updated version of Volkswagen’s MQB platform, which is shared with the Audi A1, Seat Ibiza and Skoda Fabia. It is likely to remain about the same size overall, but a longer wheelbase should see cabin space improved.

Under the bonnet, there will be a range of 1.0-litre, three-cylinder petrol engines, while the 1.5-litre TSI unit offered in the larger Golf is also expected to make an appearance. Further down the line, a performance-orientated GTI version is expected.
Technology should be largely upgraded from the outgoing model, with the new touchscreen unit introduced on the Golf likely to make an appearance. However, base Polo variants are unlikely to feature any exciting new tech as VW likes to keep the cost low.
Volkswagen will be broadcasting the reveal live from an event in Berlin on Friday from 10am BST.
