A few small checks and some driving tweaks can help to make this summer bank holiday easier.

Drivers are already being warned to expect a ‘frantic Friday’ as the summer’s bank holiday brings the prospect of very busy roads.

The RAC has already stated that it estimates up to 20 million leisure trips will be made by car between Friday, August 28 and Monday, August 31. However, there are some things you can do to make travel a little easier and we’ve looked into what you need to do.

Make your pre-travel checks

Given that there is rain forecast for many areas of the UK over the bank holiday, it’ll be a good idea to check that your car’s wipers are working properly too. If the rubber has perished, swap them out – it’s easy to do yourself, though many motor part suppliers can do it for you if needed.

Try to avoid peak times

Some key pinch-points – such as the M5 South from Bristol and the M1 north of Northamptonshire – will always be tricky spots traffic-wise, but setting off during off-peak times can definitely help.

Plan in stops

If you’re travelling with children or pets, then you’ll need to factor in some stops. However, service stations are likely to be busy across the bank holiday, so it might be a good idea to research some off-route areas that might be quieter.

Consider stopping off in a town nearby to your route, or even a garden centre.

Make sure you’ve got enough fuel or charge

Don’t take a chance with your fuel levels. Always make sure that you’ve got enough in the tank and, if you’re in an electric car, always leave yourself a buffer when it comes to charge.

Pack a breakdown kit

It can be a good idea to pack a fully-charged powerbank, too, so you’re always able to top up your phone even if your car has died.

Be prepared for lengthy waits

Even with the best will in the world, you might still end up stuck in traffic for a while. If you’ve got little ones in the car, then make sure you’ve packed snacks and water, as well as some games to keep them entertained.

If you’ve got a dog in the car, then make sure that you’ve got plenty of water for them packed up and some high-value treats to help out if they’re feeling stressed while sitting in traffic.
