Venues cancel shows due to freezing weather conditions

A series of shows across the region have been cancelled due to snow.

Officials announced the cancellation of Paul Weller’s Genting Arena concert tonight

Bosses at the Genting Arena have tonight announced that Paul Weller’s concert has been called off.

In a joint statement from the Genting Arena and the promoter, officials said: "We are sorry to announce that tonight’s concert has been cancelled due to the severe weather conditions.

"We apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused, but the safety of our patrons and staff are our top priority."

Wolverhampton's Arena Theatre has called off tonight's performance of Medea Electronica and stated that they will keep attendees 'updated throughout today whether tomorrow's performance of The Clown on the Moon will go ahead'.

Birmingham's Old Rep theatre has said it will be closed today, while Bromsgrove's Artrix Theatre has announced this morning's screening of Journey's End at 11am will not go ahead.

The REP theatre has also announced its closer due to 'extreme weather' meaning tonight's performances of The Winslow Boy and Elephant will not be going ahead.

Following Irish comedian Dara O Briain's first Birmingham Hippodrome show, that he performed last night, tonight's performance has been cancelled.

The City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra's concert at Symphony Hall will also not go ahead.

Director of sales and marketing, Richard Loftus, said: "Despite the adverse weather conditions, performances at Symphony Hall took place yesterday.

"With conditions forecast to deteriorate later today, performances at Birmingham Hippodrome, Birmingham REP and City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra’s concert at Symphony Hall will not go ahead.

"City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra’s concert, Best of the West End at Symphony Hall will be postponed.

"All bookers for tonight’s concert will be contacted next week with further information and confirmation of the new concert date. Tonight’s weekly free Jazzlines gig, in Symphony Hall’s foyer, has also been cancelled along with tomorrow morning’s free monthly Musical Picnic. We apologise for any inconvenience caused."

Despite this, Birmingham rock legends Magnum are still set to play their show at the venue tonight.

Stafford Schools Gotta Sing event at Stafford Gatehouse Theatre has been postponed and will take place on an alternative date at the end of March say organisers SSPA Events.

Wolverhampton's Newhampton Arts Centre has announced that Fundraiser with Kitchen Collective and Women, Art and Action will not be going ahead this weekend.

Fundraiser with Kitchen Collective has been rescheduled to April 14.

Shrewsbury's Theatre Severn has posted that tonight's performance of Heatwave and Odyssey has been rescheduled to May 12, but all other forthcoming performances are currently expected to go ahead.

Dudley Zoo and West Midlands Safari Park, meanwhile, will be closed today - but have promised to update visitors on plans for the weekend.

Tomorrow's VIP Record Fair at Wolverhampton Slade Rooms has been cancelled for safety reasons.

Deep Purple Family Tree, that was set to take place tonight at Bilston's Robin 2, has been rescheduled to August 4.

Shows due to go ahead this evening include Paul Weller at Birmingham's Genting Arena, the IAAF World Indoor Championships at Arena Birmingham, and Hairspray at Wolverhampton Grand Theatre.

Those planning on journeying to shows tonight have been warned that overnight works on the M6 North may affect their journeys.

Some venues which remained open last night faced backlash from some fans who could not make it to the shows.

Welsh rockers Stereophonics, who played the Genting Arena, have took to social media to address fans following their show yesterday evening, saying that they are 'working with the promoter and venue to address the situation'.
