B&B in picturesque valley set to close as costs make it 'no longer viable'
A B&B and tearoom in one of Wales’s beauty spots is to shut down as the business is deemed “no longer viable” in the current economic climate.

Penbont House is the only B&B in the Elan Valley, and sits within a Dark Sky Park.
But despite being in such an ideal setting, the business has been unable to survive the cost of living crisis. Penbont House announced on its Facebook page on Friday last week that it will close its doors on May 20.
The Elan Valley Estate Trust said: “It is with regret that we announce the forthcoming closure. After much consideration the trust has taken the difficult decision that Penbont House is no longer viable in its current format and the current economic climate.
“To our loyal customers, we are really grateful for your custom and support over the years.
“We will continue to open fully until May 13 so we hope that those of you who enjoy visiting will have the chance to do so. Overnight guests will continue to be welcomed until May 20.”
The trust urged customers with vouchers to use them and book in before May 13. The post added: “We hope to re-purpose the building so that visitors can still have the opportunity to utilise this amazing location in future and further updates will follow.
“We cannot stress enough how difficult a decision this has been, we would like to recognise the hard work and commitment of our staff and thank all of you for your custom.”
Penbont House was formerly a guest house known as the Flickering Lamp.
The current business was established in May 2012. In 2019 it was refurbished and extended to provide five en-suite rooms, named after the Elan and Claerwen Valleys’ dams.
Locals and customers responded to the post voicing their sadness with some calling on the owners to re-think their decision.
