Shrewsbury boss John Askey has returned to former club Macclesfield Town to sign defender Kieran Kennedy.

Kennedy becomes the new Town manager's second signing after the capture of Dagenham & Redbridge forward Fejiri Okenabirhie.

The 24-year-old was part of the Macclesfield team that won the National League under Askey last season.

“I had Kieran last year,” Askey said. “It took us about six months to get him properly fit because he had been out ill for six months, but once he was fit he was a completely different player who has got a lot of ability.

“He’s big and strong, he’s quick and I think he’s someone who could do well. I think it’s just circumstances that stopped him pushing on before.

“He’s very comfortable on the ball but he can be aggressive as well and he’s decent in the air. I think he can be a very good player for us.

“His main position is centre-back, he can play right or left but on occasions he can step into midfield.

“The strength of the team last season was at the back and we didn’t concede many goals.

“It’s important we keep those players and Kieran coming in gives us another option if we need it.”
