Thirty-three schools participated in a full afternoon of rugby, building upon the excitement of the recent Rugby World Cup.

All teams produced some scintillating rugby with fast-flowing tries and some dogged defending.

The year three and four competition welcomed newcomers Woodlands, Hadley and Windmill to the sport and all three performed extremely well against more established rugby schools.

All 14 schools were initially pooled into four groups.

The winners of each of the initial groups in Grange Park, Moorfield, Short Wood and Tibberton then battled it out against each other to determine the overall winners.

Having not lost a game all day, Tibberton were crowned champions with Short Wood losing only one game to finish as runners-up.

For years five and six, the format remained the same as they were split into groups and another set of round robin fixtures were completed.

In a pulsating final, St Peter's Edgmond lifted the overall winners' shield, beating Muxton 10-9 on a golden try after the score had been level at the end of normal time.

Dothill beat Tibberton A 8-7 in the third and fourth place play-off. In the plate competition, SS Peter & Paul overcame Short Wood 5-2 in the final.

John Fletcher and Coalbrookdale finished the competition in joint third place.

This competition forms part of a programme of activities that are delivered by the Telford & Wrekin School Sports Partnership.

School Sports Partnership manager Frankie Williams spoke of his delight at the number of young people participating.

He said: "It was great to see so many schools taking part, bringing quality and enthusiasm to the competition.

"It would be great if these and more new schools were involved in the future. Young people wishing to participate further in rugby union can do so at either Newport Rugby Club or Telford Hornets."
