Bucks eye Jones as two set for exit

AFC Telford United are in talks with Gateshead midfielder Andrai Jones as they said goodbye to Adam Farrell – and possibly Neill Byrne too.

Jones played 20 games in the Conference Premier for Gateshead last season, helping them to finish 10th.

Now he is on the radar of Telford, but they face competition from two Conference Premier clubs.

Liverpool-born Jones played for Everton and Preston as a youth-teamer before getting his Football League break with Bury in 2013, playing 19 times in the League.

From there he was loaned to Altrincham where he played once before being snapped up by Barnsley in a permanent deal in January 2013.

He played twice for the Tykes in the Championship and had loan spells out of Oakwell with Tranmere, playing two games, and Alfreton where he added a further 10 appearances before joining Gateshead last summer.

"He's six foot tall, athletic and he gets around the pitch and the gaffer has spoken to him but I think there's two other clubs in for him as well," said assistant manager Chris Holland.

"If he wants to get back into the Football League then we can give him the platform because there are always plenty of scouts here."

Telford are also trying to land an experienced centre-half to cover the loss of Byrne, who has been given a deadline of today to decide his future.

Boss Steve Kittrick spoke to the 23-year-old yesterday, as he continues to struggle to reach a decision on where he wants to play.

Byrne, who has a year left on his contract, went on the transfer list earlier this summer and attracted a lower wage offer to go to an un-named Conference Premier outfit. Then he decided to return to the Bucks and trained on Tuesday but didn't turn up on Thursday.

"I've been on the phone to him and he doesn't know what to do so we've given him until today to decide," said Kittrick.

Through a current Bucks player, Telford have lined up an un-named replacement for Byrne who has been playing in the Conference Premier but wants to go part-time.

Farrell's transfer to Stalybridge Celtic will see him link up again with the man who signed him for Telford – former Bucks boss Liam Watson.

And Telford have a replacement for Farrell in mind in freed Shrewsbury Town youngster Niall Flint, who is on trial with the Bucks. Flint came through the ranks at Town and appeared twice on the bench as an unused substitute as a 16-year-old in 2013-14, against Carlisle and Preston.
