Bridgnorth boss Lee Mills feels robbed in derby

Bridgnorth boss Lee Mills bemoaned a smash-and-grab job from hosts Ellesmere in a dramatic Shropshire derby clash, writes CHRIS HUDSON .

A stunning 35-yard volley from Chris Cathrall in the very last minute won the Midland Alliance contest for Rangers at Beech Grove last night.

But that told only a fraction of the tale from a game that saw the visitors dominate for much of the night.

“It was a travesty of justice,” said Mills, who could hardly believe what he’d seen.

“If they’d come wearing balaclavas and carrying swag bags they couldn’t have looked more like they’d robbed three points off us.

“They’ve got battered from the first whistle to the last and won it with an absolute wonder goal – but that’s football for you.”

Bridgnorth had got off to a dream start when Anwar Olugbon capitalised on an error by experienced Ellesmere goalkeeper Andy Mulliner after just three minutes.

But they spurned a number of opportunities to build on that opener and were made to pay as the home side levelled on 21 minutes – Nathan Hodge cutting in from the right and burying a left foot shot.

Watched by a crowd of 98, both sides looked to have settled for a draw as the game wore down towards the final whistle.

But Cathrall had other ideas, sinking a terrific dipping volley to leave Bridgnorth speechless.

Ellesmere chief Matt Burton admitted: “We’ve not played well at all, we were second best throughout the game.

“We’ve played our ‘get out of jail free’ card but maybe it’s a sign of a good team when you don’t play well and still win. Normally you get one lad who has a ‘mare but we had 10 or 11.

“If they’d stuck their chances away they’d have won the game, but they didn’t,” he added.

“We were like that at the start of the season in that we were creating plenty of chances and not scoring.”
