Thousands to vote at new Shrewsbury polling stations

More than 4,500 people will vote at new polling stations in Shrewsbury after three venues were moved.

The changes will affect people voting in the Copthorne, Porthill, and Monkmoor wards – a total of 4,670 registered voters.

They will come into force for Shropshire Council's next elections and all future votes.

Under the proposals, both the Copthorne and Porthill polling stations will move from Woodfield County Infants School to Copthorne Army Reserve Centre, while Monkmoor will move from Crowmoor School to the Baptist Church Community Hall.

Councillors approved plans to relocate the three polling stations at a full meeting of Shropshire Council at Shirehall yesterday.

The changes will cost Shropshire Council an extra £470 for every parliamentary and unitary election.

The changes for the Copthorne division, which includes 937 electors, were required because of concerns raised by the school's headteacher, parents, and division member Peter Nutting about closing the school during voting.

The changes for the Porthill ward, which has 1,934 electors, are due to the same considerations.

A report presented to council said that the change to the Monkmoor polling station is down to difficulties people had accessing the venue during previous elections.

The changes come after all polling stations were inspected during the police and crime commissioner elections in May 2016, and the EU referendum in June 2016.
