About 70 tickets were handed out in Newport between midday last Friday and 2am on Saturday.

Pc Lee Thomas, from Newport Safer Neighbourhood Team, said the only reason he stopped handing them out was that he physically ran out of tickets.

He said: "There is no getting away from the fact this last week that parking has been a major issue.

"Between midday last Friday and 2am on Saturday morning, PCSO Moore and myself gave out somewhere around 70 parking tickets and warning notices around Newport. In fact I only stopped then because I'd physically run out of tickets to issue."

Parking has long been an issue in Newport, with the problem being added to when events are being held at Harper Adams University.

Pc Thomas said: "Much, but it must be said not all, was related to the Freshers Ball at Harper Adams and we have spoken with the university about the issues raised .

"As a result of this, and the general increase in parking complaints we are receiving, we are now looking at other alternative ways we can try and encourage motorists to park more considerately around our town and villages."
