The scene of the blaze in City Road, Ellerdine Heath, involving 200 tons of hay, was not cleared until 2am yesterday.

Work was scaled back from 10am, when crews concentrated on protecting neighbouring hedgerows and other straw bales.

The majority of firefighters left the scene about 12 hours after it had broken out. But crews from Wellington were sent back at midnight with the incident finally closed in the early hours.

Meanwhile, crews were called to Plealey Lane in Longden, near Shrewsbury, just before 4.30pm yesterday to tackle a fire where 200m by 200m of straw was alight. Firefighters left the scene at about 5pm.
