The heifer escaped from Welshpool Livestock Market at about 9am yesterday and made its way along the bypass and up the Erw Wen housing estate, coming to a standstill behind a house in Bronwylfa Road.

The road was closed and three armed police officers arrived at the scene at 11.45pm and four shots were heard at 12.08pm.

Residents came out of their homes to watch after they heard about the loose animal

John Williams, who lives close by, said: "Police were on the scene from about 9.30am and the road was closed. The heifer came up the road, went behind the houses and was stood still there for about two hours until the armed officers arrived."

Officers and staff from the livestock market attended the scene while they waited for the armed officers to arrive.

Carol Lloyd added: "It has been a real different morning on the estate that's for sure, it is not often you see a cow passing your window.

"There was quite a long time then before anything happened as the cow seemed to nestle in an orchid behind a house until the armed police arrived.

"Then there was four loud shots and the police cordon was moved back further so they could take it away." A spokeswoman for Dyfed Powys Police said about 12 officers and three armed officers attended the scene and put the cow to sleep.
