An appeal has been launched to help a cat that vets in Telford believed may have been deliberately burned.

With wounds down to the bone, undernourished and with pneumonia, vets at Haygate Vetinary Centre in Wellington said they were shocked when Nugget the kitten was brought to them. They believe he may have been burned – and that it was no accident.

Now he is in the care of TabiiCats Cat Rescue, who will look after him until he is well enough to put up for adoption.

Owner Tabii McGladdery said she couldn't believe it when she saw the state the little kitten was in.

"I've been doing this for years and I'm not shocked by many things now, but I was horrified when I saw Nugget," she said.

"It's really difficult to tell what has happened to him. It's not like he's been dipped in anything or caught in an engine, because it would cover his body. The vet thinks that he's been burned.

"It's heartbreaking that people would want to do it. It sickens you.

"He's terribly thin, so he's been a stray for some time. He had an X-ray and he has pneumonia too."

Vets will now wait and see how the worst of Nugget's wounds starts to heal before making a decision on whether or not he keeps all of his legs.

Now TabiiCats have put out an appeal for support to help fund his upkeep – a call that cat lovers on social media are already responding to.

"It's really nice that people want to support us," Tabii said.

"Resources are limited. Haygate are brilliant in supporting us, but obviously we will still need to pay for his treatment.

"Once he's healed he can be rehomed, but that can take a long time.

"He's got wounds which are right down to the bone. He's going to be with us for a good few months."
