Man, 62, killed in Shropshire border railway bridge crash is named

A man who was killed in a crash on one of the region's roads over Easter weekend has been named as 62-year-old Frank Woodcock, a well-known builder and property developer in the Market Drayton area.

Mr Woodcock ran JRT Developments with son Jonathan at Old Station Yard in Pipe Gate, near Woore. He was also a member of Woore Parish Council.

He was involved in a number of projects to build homes in villages around Market Drayton and had recently been vocal in the call to tackle delays and high costs in the planning process for house building.

Mr Woodcock was killed when the van he was in collided with both another car and the side of a railway bridge on the A51 at Stableford, on the Shropshire/Staffordshire border, on Saturday night. The road remained closed throughout much of Sunday for emergency repairs to the bridge.

The accident happened at the junction with Dog Lane and Bent Lane, where the A51 makes a 90 degree turn to the left to go over the bridge.

Ambulances crews were called to the scene at about 7.55pm, but could not save Mr Woodcock.

Murray MacGregor, speaking for West Midlands Ambulance Service, said: "Unfortunately, when ambulance crews arrived it quickly became apparent that nothing could be done to save the van driver and he was confirmed dead at the scene.

"The elderly couple in the other car were checked over but were unhurt, if somewhat shaken. They were discharged on scene."
