Car thief caught after getting stuck in mud near Shrewsbury

A thief got stuck in the mud driving a stolen car and trailer into a field near Shrewsbury as police chased him.

Officers followed the Mitsubishi Pagero, which was towing a trailer with a mini digger, after it was spotted on the A5 near to the Dobbies island on the outskirts of Shrewsbury. It was believed to have been stolen from a nearby quarry.

After seeing police, the driver of the Mitsubishi went across a field off the A49 near to Preston roundabout where the vehicle became stuck shortly after 9.20pm on Tuesday.

A 37-year-old man from Whitchurch was arrested on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle, driving under the influence of a controlled drug in excess of the specified limit and possession of articles for use in theft or burglary. He is now on bail.
