Shropshire and Mid Wales floods: River levels continue to rise

River levels were still rising today across much of Shropshire and Mid Wales following a weekend of heavy rain.

The flood barriers were back up in Shrewsbury and the Frankwell car park was closed today.

There were flood warnings in place for the River Vyrnwy at Maesbrook and Melverley, and the River Severn at Pool Quay and Trewern and at Shrewsbury around The Quarry. The peak at Shrewsbury was not expected until later today.

Road closures are in place at Sydney Avenue and Gravel Hill Lane in Shrewsbury, plus the road between Melverley and Melverley Green.

No decision has yet been made on the need for the flood defences in Ironbridge which were taken down last Sunday.

Flood alerts remain in place for the River Severn through the county and Upper Teme in south Shropshire.

Environment Agency spokesman Dave Throup said there were "huge amounts" of water and some roads closed in the Severn Vyrnwy confluence area, although he said the levels were not quite as high as a fortnight ago.

He also reminded drivers that Llandrinio Bridge remains closed due to flood damage and that other roads could be affected by high water.

On Saturday, an Environment Agency spokesman said 60mm of rain fell in 12 hours in the Severn and Vyrnwy catchment areas.

The warnings follow on from the wet weather Shropshire has encountered over the past week, which included 11 flood warnings and 10 flood alerts in place for areas affecting Shropshire and Mid Wales last week.

Last week Mr Throup said that he had been pleased with the way the county's flood defences had coped with the recent rainfall.

He said more than 2,000 homes and businesses in the county had been saved from potential flooding.
